Discotech Underground is actually two...two...two shows in one!

The first half is a "Happy Hour" of sorts (because it's five o'clock somewhere, right?), spinning the kinds of sounds you might have heard at a real, authentic 1960's DISCOTECH as cool cats and swingin' chicks danced the night away in their mod threads and mini skirts to hard-driving sounds under the flashing lights! The only thing missing are the cage dancers...but we're working on it!

The second half is for when you head home after a wild night, and ease in with the heady, trippy, mind-expanding sounds of a groovy free-form UNDERGROUND rock radio station that digs deep into their library and blows your mind all over again!

Wasn't Dynaflex an RCA gimmick (classical LP collectors avoid them)?
  10:25pm

Clark - I have a nice, big safe to protect all your rarest garage 45s.

No bridge. Just a box for your 45s.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:26pm

bigplanetnoise:

And yet some f the Dynaflex lps sound great.
Avatar 🥁 10:27pm

dr, you have to admit that not many labels have had so much talk about their vinyl like RCA Dynaflex, right? Those Guess Who Lps have zero E.D. if you get my drift. They just straighten right out. ;)

doctorjazz:

I know Classical LP collectors avoid Dynaflex if they can, but didn't realize it was outsourced to other labels/genres.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Discotech Underground:

doctorjazz-RCA did contract pressings for other labels all the time. Classical collectors avoid Dynaflex and Dynagroove pressings because they are too noisy for their discriminating ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
StringOFperils:

My copy of BB KIng's Indianola Mississippi Seeds, on ABC, I think, is on Dynaflex...and it is disturbingly flexible....not even sure why

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:36pm

Avatar 🥁 10:38pm

Jay-One Kind Favor was the flip side to the Going Up The Country single.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm

I believe I was confusing "Dynaflex" with "Dynagroove", another RCA process, despised by Classical LP Audiophiles.

Jay S.:

Kip - exactly. One of my favorites as a kid (and it still is).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:40pm

White Dogs in a pinch, Shaded Dog if possible (they sell for a pretty penny), NO Dynagroove.
  10:41pm
bigplanetnoise:

Not all Dynaflex LPs were noisy. But the noisy ones got the attention. Ive been told that the compound they were made of was more prone to getting “burned” in the presses, thus the noise. The ones that were made correctly sound just fine.
Avatar 🥁 10:42pm
WLSClark:

One of the LPs Chili was looking for, I think? Did you find one?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Discotech Underground:

BPN-I have never really had a noise issue with Dynaflex, it was more that the recording level was considerably lower than a non-Dynaflex LP. My Indian Summer LP is Dynaflex sounds great but the music is at a pretty low level so I have to tweeze it in order for it to sound it's best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Chili MacPagoda:

Clark, we started out our convo about CCR with their version of Good Golly Miss Molly and it kinda took off from there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
doctorjazz:

The Wiki above says they went to the Dynaflex to save money while still using Fresh vinyl, but a more flexible (and less expensive) formulation. Other companies at the time were reusing vinyl from returned records, these were said to be noisier than virgin vinyl records, the RCA process was supposed to save shekels while still using virgin vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm
Chili MacPagoda:

Oh yes now I remember what you’re talking about Clark!!! I’ve been looking around for the Lemon Pipers lp still, along with Thee Remains. Haven’t given up yet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
StringOFperils:

Interesting that in the age of double gate-fold die-cut special press-run LP jackets with lots of inserts, that they'd opt for saving money on the music-delivery system, the vinyl.
  10:48pm
bigplanetnoise:

doctorjazz- exactly. Which is why when they WERE pressed correctly, they sounded great. It was virgin vinyl, when most others were using regrind.
  10:50pm
Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Discotech Underground:

BPN-It would also make sense that since they were thinner, the recording level would have to be lower to allow for a shallower groove because of the thinness, wouldn't it?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Discotech Underground:

Howdy, Phillippe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
StringOFperils:

LP thinness as by-product of lower waveform. That is fascinating.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Discotech Underground:

StringOFperils-More like lower waveform to enable a thinner record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
StringOFperils:

Hah! Hmmm
  10:54pm
bigplanetnoise:

Not really, Kip. Thickness doesn’t have anything to do with level. That’s all an artifact of either program length or a decision made by the cutting engineer. The more dynamic the program, the lower the overall level. More compressed equals more level. Thus, all the silly “in your face” comments made by 45 collectors. All they’re hearing is a louder, more compressed/limited master.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Discotech Underground:

BPN-Thanks for clearing that up, which is why I posed the theory. I figured you would have the correct analysis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

Per Wikipedia, ""Laspitch" was originally intended for a Broadway musical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Chili MacPagoda:

Were S&G into psych garage rock for a minute or was that as much the influence of Tom Wilson? And why hasn’t there been a documentary/music retrospective of his influence/talent as a producer? Asking as I sincerely don’t know and have wondered about it.

This sounds like a song Pavement would’ve covered live. I dig it.

Great to hear my good friend Kenny Aaronson in his teenage years! He's still working hard and making anyone he plays with sound better!! Mark Bell too! Although Marky had to do some unusual shedding to reinvent his skills when joining Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee.. Dust was awesome!!

Agreed KIp! It's really incredible how great they were at that point! Hey Chili! Yes.. Marc Bell became Marky Ramone! He and Kenny were a fabulous rhythm section..they both went to Erasmus High School in Brooklyn!!

Electric Flag twice this week! Right here is my favorite part of Another Country!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:34pm

prguitar-This is my fave Electric Flag cut of all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Chili MacPagoda:

That’s so cool, PRGuitar! Thank you for the info. Erasmus HS near the south end of Prospect Park? If so I lived at one point a ten minute walk from that building.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Discotech Underground:

I was unaware of the Dust/Ramones connection as well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
prguitar:

That would be the place Chili! The building is still there, but Erasmus Hall High School was closed in 1994.. It had a long run..was opened in the early 1900's. It was a venerable place when my Dad was growing up in the 1930's, and stayed that way for a long time..

I agree with you Kip! That record was a life changer for me in a number of ways! It's too bad they couldn't keep things together a little longer.. well there were quite a few volatile personalities within the Flag.. Thanks for a fabulous show Kip! I know we'll cross paths again real soon! Goodnight everyone.. take good care!!
