When I was a kid, my dog had epilepsy and I'll never forget sitting out in the rain with him in the yard making sure he didn't hurt himself during a sudden seizure. We had to put him to sleep because of the severity of the disease.

Our cats are 15, 15, and 18 now, and the dog is 9 and just now starting to slow down just a touch but noticeable for the first time. Intimations of mortality are never far away. But lots of joy, too.
