	2:54pm Stork: omigod, RevRabb- - lotta clashes there. The doc covers it well. Dolphy wasn't afraid of anyone - not even Mingus. Called him "Baron." Mingus would say don't bring that fuckin bass clarinet to my gigs.Dolphy would say "yes, Baron." Then bring it anyway. Mingus grew to love it, and everything Dolphy eventually. When Dolphy announce that he was gonna stay in Europe and live for a while, Mingus was PISSED. Jaki Byard tells that story.
	2:56pm Stork: During one of these Paris performances, Mingus renamed "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat to So Long Eric aka Don't Stay Too Long, Eric aka Hope so, Eric. Mingus knew what he was losing.

	2:59pm adamdoesit: I wonder about the depth of Mingus' intution of that loss. Goodbye Pork Pie Hat was Mingus' elegy for Prez's passing. That he renamed it for Dolphy seems eerily prescient. Maybe one of those odd hours when it would've been healthier to stay close to Mingus.

	3:04pm coelacanth∅: since c.1996 i've had mostly old volvo station wagons and just threw a blanket on the roof (or not) threw the bicycle up there and chained it to the roof rack. that was my bicycle rack.
	3:06pm doctorjazz: Not sure I know enough to ask specifics, @adamdoesit. Had one on my old Minivan that used a hitch mounted under it-don't have one on current car, is it worth it to install one? Any brands better than the other? Any "best buys", bang for the buck?
	3:07pm coelacanth∅: reading that 1962 article a little at a time, and it always pisses me off when people say such stupid things as "what are you trying to do?" and phases like "valid in jazz". open you little bubbleworlds up, poseurs.

	3:12pm coelacanth∅: doctor i used to use a cheap trunk-mount bike rack. it worked fine but damaged the paint at the 2 contact points. i didn't care, in ~1994 on my 1975 nova, but you might
	3:12pm doctorjazz: Hans Bennick got a mention above, saw him with the Willem Breuker Kollektief a number of times. Aside from being a great percussionist, he has a wacky performing sense of humor. At one show at the Knitting Factory, they gave him his drum solo-he got out from behind his drums, went around the club with his drum sticks, playing anything playable in the audience, on the tables, chairs, it was a riot (and amazing as well)!
	3:12pm adamdoesit: doc, I think hitch-mount is worth it. I use roof racks myself: good for parallel parking, bad for garages. Either is preferable to the temporary strap-on dealies. I like Yakima's stuff. It's well made, with easy access to spares. You can get cheaper, but maybe not cheaper and well-supported. Thule is comparable, maybe a step up. The cool (and moneyed) kids now roll with Küat.
	3:15pm Stork: Agree, coelacanth∅: - and this guy seems almost enlightened for that time in jazz criticism. There's another (audio) interview with Leonard Feather, who comes off as a real narrow-minded douche-bagerino.
	3:19pm Stork: WOW!!! The time i saw Bennik at the KF was also unforgettable! He actually has kept detailed scrapbooks of everything and was able to read from his diary about the sessions with Dolphy. Fascinating stuff.
	3:28pm fred: I only saw Han Bennink once, but it was great. I had a chance to chat with him between sets, and at one point asked him about a Sonic Youth show he should have played but didn't. He said he had such a bad hangover that day he missed his train

June 27, 2021: The Dolphy Double Deluge, Part 2
The Dolphy Deep Dive goes Deeper! A proper tribute to the great multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy would never be confined to a mere four hours, so we celebrate his 93rd birthday, HOLDING HIM OVER FOR A SECOND WEEK at The Stork Club. On the program: more of his greatest recordings as a leader, his first sessions with Roy Porter and his 17 Boppers, and from sideman dates such as Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, Pony Poindexter(?!) and Abbey Lincoln. Dolphy’s mind-blowing virtuosity was equally astonishing on bass clarinet, flute and alto saxophone. His distinctive tone and his singular harmonic concept encompassed all of the known human musical realm, as well as all the sounds of the natural world. Mingus would say don't bring that fuckin bass clarinet to my gigs.Dolphy would say "yes, Baron." Then bring it anyway. Mingus grew to love it, and everything Dolphy eventually. When Dolphy announce that he was gonna stay in Europe and live for a while, Mingus was PISSED. Jaki Byard tells that story.

	3:12pm doctorjazz: Hans Bennick got a mention above, saw him with the Willem Breuker Kollektief a number of times. Aside from being a great percussionist, he has a wacky performing sense of humor. At one show at the Knitting Factory, they gave him his drum solo-he got out from behind his drums, went around the club with his drum sticks, playing anything playable in the audience, on the tables, chairs, it was a riot (and amazing as well)!
	3:12pm adamdoesit: doc, I think hitch-mount is worth it. I use roof racks myself: good for parallel parking, bad for garages. Either is preferable to the temporary strap-on dealies. I like Yakima's stuff. It's well made, with easy access to spares. You can get cheaper, but maybe not cheaper and well-supported. Thule is comparable, maybe a step up. The cool (and moneyed) kids now roll with Küat.

	3:19pm Stork: WOW!!! The time i saw Bennik at the KF was also unforgettable! He actually has kept detailed scrapbooks of everything and was able to read from his diary about the sessions with Dolphy. Fascinating stuff.
	3:28pm fred: I only saw Han Bennink once, but it was great. I had a chance to chat with him between sets, and at one point asked him about a Sonic Youth show he should have played but didn't. He said he had such a bad hangover that day he missed his train
