i've been long overdue for hearing this long version again!
Avatar 1:11pm
Bob Brainen:

dan, I agree, my favorite Neil too (Springfield) many will disagree..
Good afternoon PaulRobeson1920! Hey, 1st time I'm writing "good afternoon!"
  1:12pm
Jeff:

I think Stills has often been overshadowed by that guy from Canada. In my opinion, Stephen was a better guitar player and singer, but I’d give the edge to Neil as a songwriter. But, hands down, if I had the chance, I’d hang with Stills any day. Neil? No way
Avatar 1:13pm
Bob Brainen:

Wm. there is another version I just heard, but it's not much longer, so not sure.
  1:13pm
Listener Robert:

Just thinking about Stormalong, I recall actually having the experience, more than once, of tying a knot that contradicted itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm
WR:

@1:04 @Jay S: thanks for the link. will also check at the library.
  1:14pm
dan:

Philip Glass’ scores seem to be inspired by Bernard Herrmann

Bob Brainen:

Hey Denny! Dewey was a solid player, he seldom gets mentioned. He did the job. And a great drum pattern on FWIW!

Hi coelacanthØ
  1:15pm
Listener Robert:

That sounds like the pace of a student-played version of the NNW theme I've heard. I like the faster renditions.
Avatar 1:15pm
Bob Brainen:

Good afternoon coelacanth∅! I had to copy & paste to get that symbol!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
wmfromdumont:

Yeah Bob, only a few minutes longer. Edits were probably done for continuity.
  1:16pm
Dennis Diken:

agreed, Bob - Dewey was the right tool for the job! ditto Michael Clark with The Byrds and so many other players who were the right fit to help create their respective band's "sound."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Michael 98145:

good day, everyone
Avatar 1:17pm
Bob Brainen:

Thanks Doug, Over a decade, wow, mucho impressive schedule! Thrilled to be part of it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
coelacanth∅:

i think Stephen *may* have been a better guitarist "technically", and certainly had a fine voice; though Neil worked expertly with what he had...
i'd rather hang with Neil!
(but i wouldn't not hang with Stephen!)
Avatar 1:19pm
Bob Brainen:

Jeff, Stills & Young were great together...when they got along, but eventually became 2 competing guitar wankers. But they drove each other to write amazing bodies of songs!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
chresti:

Bob, you can find the Ø if you right-click and select emojis, there's Greek and Roman alphabet options.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm

Bob (@115) sorry to be difficult!
...and you don't have to bother, when you don't feel like it!

hi chrestì

Listener Robert, some famous orchestra, don't have info. handy.
Avatar 1:21pm
Ross T.:

I'm guessing in my drinking days Dewey would be the Springfield guy to hang with! But put me down as one who feels Stills gets the short shrift. He was the leader of those bands that launched their careers. And the first Manassas is the real overlooked gem.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
wmfromdumont:

Props to Dewey Martin. And IMHO, Michael Clarke is THE rock drummer!
  1:22pm
Jeff:

Man, Judee Sill was so good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
prguitar:

Welcome Bob, and good afternoon everyone! Glad to be here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
coelacanth∅:

Stills also did a fine job with instruments other than guitar
  1:24pm
Listener Robert:

Thanks, Mr. Brainen. When I say "sounds like", that doesn't mean I think it IS. In fact the student version was much more recent. There's like almost a minute's difference between slower and faster versions, and the fast ones must be really hard to play!
Avatar 1:24pm
Bob Brainen:

Denny, we should collaborate again. How about a show with all the drummers who fit the bill but aren't mentioned enough. Some weren't flashy, some were understated. I'm thinking Dewey, Joe Butler, Joe Bauer (former Jazz drummer) etc!

Avatar 1:26pm
Bob Brainen:

Ross T. I agree and Jack Nitzsche's amazing arrangements aside, I think Stills songs on "Again" are every bit as great as Neils.
  1:26pm
Jeff:

Ross T - I love that first Manassas album! I was in my dorm room at SUNY New Paltz the day it was released, and the DJ on the radio played all four sides. Immediately loved it and have loved it ever since.
  1:26pm
Listener Robert:

This one -- www.youtube.com... -- manages to squeeze a few seconds out of the one used to open the movie!
Avatar 1:28pm
Bob Brainen:

wmfromdumont, I've had 2 great drummers rave about Michael Clarke's hit-hat work, Richard X. Heyman is one, I forget the other, but Terry Adams is another big fan.
These guys make me listen harder!
  1:32pm
Listener Robert:

Which reminds me: My friend's TV show "Lost" parodied (or at least referenced) Alfred Hitchcock's being shut out of the bus. "Lost" was full of other visual "checks" of movies and TV shows -- and they're all clues to the plot.
  1:35pm
dan:

I like the shorter version of Bluebird because of the banjo
  1:36pm
Listener Robert:

That particular shot was one of several parodies of Hitchcock cameos on "Lost". In each case, it's a clue that the character shown in that role is a "director" -- i.e. someone directing or trying to direct the action.
Avatar 1:39pm
Bob Brainen:

prguitar, thanks!
dan, I've love 'em both, but Charlie Chin's banjo is just great and what a contrast it provides!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
doctorjazz:

It's a great album-my impression, sound wise, not so great (at least my 3 LP copy-not sounding bad over the internet, have to say).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm
wmfromdumont:

The long version of Bluebird was an underground "hit" on L.A. FM radio. I think the tape was given to DJ B. Mitchell Reed by Stills.
Avatar 1:41pm
Bob Brainen:

doctor jazz, I'm not a real analytical listener, to be honest. I'm actually taking it from the Complete Prestige Dolphy box. And yeah, the compression and maybe other stuff the station adds makes everything sound better!

Doug Schulkind:

A week from tomorrow is Dolphy's birthday. Here on the Drummer Stream your host Stork will be presenting, live from Münster, Germany, a four-hour on-air birthday party! Sunday, June 20, 12-4pm (ET).

Dolphy would have turned 93.

@L. Robert - cool facts about Lost. I was a fan.

Detroit burning—- reminds me of Jim Collier’s 1968 “Burn Baby Burn”

“really wanted a decent job, now…
I really wanted to be somebody and all I had was a match…
If I can't enjoy the American dream, won't be water but fire next time So I said, Burn baby burn…”
