@chris Central Oregon is gorgeous. I spent some quality time near Madras for the solar eclipse. The fields of wild sage made the sky smell like pancakes. Hearing Chic reminds me that it has been 40 years since my 8th grade class took a bus ride from Queens for a week at Colonial Williamsburg, VA. The soundtrack for the ride was mostly Chic, MJ - Off The Wall, and Rappers’ Delight. Kids with boo boxes. I got to sneak in side 1 of Blondie Parallel Lines.
Avatar 3:55pm
ifny:

@Julie you could always affect friendly obliviousness and visit them with a tin of baked goods and an 'I'm your new neighbour nice to meetcha' vibe. And 'I'm looking forward to settling into the neighbourhood, if you want to have tea sometime or if there's anything I need to know here's my contact info'. Maybe they don't know how to ask for what they want, so they get all passive aggressive and overreact. Then if they don't get the escalation they expect, it could derail the toxic pattern they are accustomed to.

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
chris in the redwoods:

i have a trumpian neighbor as well. we hang out occasionally, but i fear our last hang, where BLM came up (about a year ago) was a tipping point for me. i haven't been back since. that said, he's a neighbor and we all support and look out for each other, wrt our neighborhood.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Phillippe:

We are "the new people" in our neighborhood, even though we've been here 3 years. We bought the second oldest house in the neighborhood (built 1955, been falling doen since 1995...) from the 93 year old wife of the guy who's parents built the house. Pillars of the community, even have a room in the rec center named after them. The old owners used to let people walk through their yard to get to the community park next to us, use the water access, etc. People have been very respectful and don't take those liberties anymore (we don't mind if they do) but its a weird experience. Perfectly nice neighbors, but our buying the pace definitely upset a lot of things that people used to take advantage of.

Avatar 4:07pm
ifny:

@Julie wariness is understandable! But hopefully you have at least one thing in common, the desire for no stress with neighbours. A good foot forward could just signal that you are nice and reasonable and they should leave you be :) Camaraderie isn't required. So maybe giving them your email instead of phone number in case they have larger issues with boundaries:P

Phillippe:

Julie: Its funny how territorial people can get. My eldest is looking to buy a house and asked us to go with him to view a place he was interested in. We get there and my son and his agent had the two spaces in front of the house taken (suburban tract shoebox houses) so I parked in front of the next door neighbor's place. We're there about 20 minutes and the neighbor pulls up in his big ass pick-up loaded with cases of bottled water. He parks in front of my car and then stands in the middle of the road, hands on hips, making exaggerated body motions to indicate he's looking for someone. I see him and ask if he wants me to move. He says yes, I move my car, and he backs up to where I was parked, then pulls a hand truck out of the bed and starts loading it with the bottled water. Two things made it really absurd -- he had a driveway that went practically to the front door, and by moving to the space I was parked in meant he had to drag his cart even farther to get to his driveway (which was uphill!). Certainly claimed his turf. I told my son to nope right outta considering that place...
