Cool, redkayak. Both my mother and her father were in the Navy. In WWII my mom was a "Radioman" and her division helped find an enemy submarine off the Maine Coast. Luckily it was finally declassified before she passed and they gave them recognition.

@Irene - so THAT's where you got your interest in radio ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
listener james from westwood:

A fortunate declassification indeed, given how long the folks at Bletchley Park were silenced.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Irene Trudel:

redkayak, that influence is so true. My mom would occasionally talk about her experiences and "sound" words out with Morse Code. She also first told me about shortwave, and my first radio had a few of the bands on it, further sparking my interest. It was a no-brainer when in high school I had the chance to join their radio station. I haven't looked back!

I got our picnic basket packed, Irene. There's a bottle of wine in there cause it's, ya know, Germany. It's our civic duty here to drink as much as we can hold, in public, at all events. So, maybe two bottles. I went there on his hundreth birthday with my ipod, a blue-tooth speaker, copious amounts of red wine, and some hash, just to honor him properly. People had been there before me and the site was spiffed up and festooned with flowers. Nerby mourners were a bit nonplussed, but hey - you're only a hundred once!

...from my favorite Miles album, Michael. headcleaner, I believe Herr Wolfgang has been doing that for years, I went to Berlin for a work trip, and at our meet-up Stork got me so high I wasn't sure I'd make it back to the hotel!

for a long time kind of blue was in the "preferred" selections on the jukebox at the pub. that means it was 50¢/song, instead of a buck.
the best part was i never knew of anyone to complain when Miles came on, which was often.

Indeed.Michael! That's the era of radio I grew up with. Free-form was really prevalent in the NY area, and even on Top 40 radio you could hear a much broader range of music than you do these days. Now most stations have been consulted-to death on what "works." it's very tiresome to my ears.
