Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Bronwyn Bishop:

Hi everyone, I'm about to talk about a legal thing with WFMU that was resolved after I recorded the show so please ignore it- here's the update:

Many thanks to the hundreds of listeners who sent us emails of support in our efforts to keep our real estate tax exemption with Jersey City. We have good news - the city's tax office has reversed their decision and has told us that our exemption will soon be put back into place.

We are still collecting all the emails that have already been sent in as support materials until this matter is legally finalized. but no more emails are needed at this time.

Thank you to our listeners for coming through for WFMU once again.

Hi Bronyn, I saw a post on FB today that New Jersey has backed down and they don't need more letters (I sent one!)

Yeah, every DJ for 4 days has said on air "Thanks, but enough with the letters." Official statement has been that JC has relented for now, but the war is not necessarily over.

Maybe we need to more consciously think about making explicit educational content in the programming and comments. I think the station is highly educational, but it might take putting into the playlists headings like "Review of the cultural history of Afro-pop" or "The influence of Broadway musicals on French cabaret music" or something. Seriously. This is the kind of stuff that makes a difference in legal contexts.

In my High School AP English class, we had to listen to Richard Burton's "Hamlet" on vinyl every day (torture) until a friend and I sneaked into the materials room and "hid" the damned album like an Easter Egg. It was enough to end the pain.

After Poseidon and Airport, the studios all said - Disaster Movies! They Make Money! And made so so many.
Then Jaws came out and they all said "Scary big animals ! They make money!"
Then Star Wars came out. "SPACE OPERAS!"
But outside of the blockbusters were all the Altman, Cassavetes, and quirky little films like Scarecrow, and of course blaxpolitation flix with Pam Grier and great soundtracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm

Harold and Maude, McCabe and Mrs. Miller both had great music too.

Zing with the info on the Glady Rice. Thank you Bronwyn.

After the recent discussion I got Heaven's Gate, have not rewatched it yet. I also got Ishtar but haven't watched it yet but it was 80s.

70s. Hmmm. Need to look at Wikipedia to refresh my memory.

@Bronwyn it's one of my favorites. McCabe & Mrs. Miller is an Altman film that featured Leonard Cohen songs. Definitely check out One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

I heard Eubie in concert after his "rediscovery." I have to say I have never seen a more enthusiastic performer, thrilled to be there and to be finally getting attention. It was a great performance for an almost 90-year-old too.

After The Sting came out and ragtime was all over the place, Eubie resurfaced and was really sharp and entertaining. In fact, his super raggy playing of Joplin tunes were much appreciated.
