Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
Evening, headcleaner. Hello, Wendy del Formaggio <3! Good evening, duke. Good evening, Mike From Brooklyn! Hello, chresti! Howdy, bigplanetnoise! Good evening, Corey! Good evening, Bruce S. Much obliged, Marco Esquandolas!
Greetings from a darkened room somewhere in the PNW, where I'm just finishing up a remote #wfh shift in isolation, but ready to bust outside and tend to some gardening, whilst keeping tuned into one of the best programmes in the multiverse.
Ha, take yer word for it, only recently heard about the BK offering Impossible Burg, good in a pinch I reckon. And of course better than supporting fast food factory farming of beef.
Ochere Ogre, I do mean "awful" in a backhanded compliment way. And you are correct that those "uncanny valley" meatless burgers are not strictly marketed to vegetarians and vegans.
Beautiful music as usual Gaylord. Not in the Easy Listening/Radio Terrace sense (as you elaborated on a couple of Fayelord shows ago). Then again, not not in that sense.
@Scott: I realized that some outback ozzie accents are as hard for me to understand as scots. (Listening to so many accents is why I can't spell in english).
ngh: I have a good ear from having my head in so much Music - but no organizational ability or application for grammars & such... & of course I gotta dip into Francais & Castellano @ the same time (child's play for you)...
@Rev Rabbit, Scott, et Gaylord: I get many English dialects, but I sometimes have to turn my brain on. Sort of like this morning, and I was trying to talk to a Salvadorian staff member at the hotel, and she couldn't understand me (I do well in Mexi and Colombian dialects)
9:18pm
phat in Lincoln:
Man. Gene Ammons's brief biography on Wikipedia is depressing.
phat et al: Geez I was just railing against the War on Drugs - in context of BreonnaTaylor murder & such. It was far too often aimed directly @ Jazz Artists specifically...
9:22pm
Andres:
Yes! That Chico O’Farril, a slow burner with lots of heat!
@Gaylord Fields I don't think see anything relatively calm making it onto the charts in the foreseeable future. I suppose there are some ballads these days, but they're also very, very earnest.
Hard to remember that only with TheBeatles & what followed did the Music Market become as huge as it was - & all the manufacture & distribution get to the size it was in the 1970s... Novelty got run out...
BruceS: Of course the whole FM revolution was Classical stations not making money switching to Rawk - & originally very Local & FreeForm. You know what has happened to all that...
@Gaylord Fields I haven't checked a European chart in years. I don't want to sound like some old grumpy guy, but I think that's too bad. I love pop songs, but mixing it up just seems better.
9:34pm
Andres:
MARRS Pump Up the Volume a No. 1 hit single in Canada and elsewhere. Not purely instrumental but pretty close I’d like to think.
Speaking of instrumentals someone at the station should play wild weekend by the Rebels in honor of the skeleton crew making it happen during covid year
I made a 4 cassette set of instrumental music back in 70's that had jingle beds, TV themes, hits and misses. Lotsa fun.
9:37pm
Mod Mokka Matti:
At times, it sounds like DJ Stashu is joining in with her slide/bird whistle on this Astral Traveler cut. At least that's what it sounded like to me over the din of my lawnmower.
9:38pm
phat in Lincoln:
@Andres while I don't really think "ahead of its time" is a great phrase. MARRS kind of were.
WLSClark - I'm just sitting on all this old Analog Media that deteriorates every time you play it - planning to convert it to Digital ...& I don't even posses the means now...
Revolution, yeah, I gotcha there. I have transferred SO many reel to reels and cassettes in past 10 years. Great stuff and fun to listen o again. My old radio shows even.
@Andres thanks. My second shot should be fully in effect by next Tuesday and ima probably find some live music. I have enjoyed the comments board a lot these past few months.
9:56pm
Bowhead:
Thanks Gaylord for turning us on to some great music. Just like life, I never know what's coming next.
Since I enjoy this show so much, I've already marked my appointment calendar for a rendezvous next Sunday. Thank you Gaylord, for making this sunny Sunday even more shimmering.
