I was just walking my dog outside while carrying my portable emergency weather radio. Did I hear you say you're in St. George right now, Rex? Hope you're on the water if you are! I definitely recommend a trip down to Great Kills beach when the show's done. One of my secret summer spots. I've been there on the hottest and busiest summer weekends, and it's still always pretty empty. During high tide, you can swim out pretty far and tread for a while. Aren't really many strong waves. You get to spin around while looking at awesome sights, like NJ, NY, other beaches, Freedom Tower, the wildlife and nature back on Great Kills beach. The swimming area is protected during summer too with lifeguards. Best way to get there, of course, is Staten Island Railway with a bicycle! B/c SIR is mostly free, I also wind up going to get pizza on the way back too.

Rosey is Listening on 91.1 MHz:

Sure thing. Great Kills was one of the only trips I did last summer, or really in the entire past year. Bike, ferry, train, bike (I also technically bike from St. George ferry to Stapleton so I don't have to pay the fare). There's a bus stop right at the entrance along Hylan Boulevard. It's really too bad NYC buses are absolutely pathetic at accommodating bicycles and none are available at the entrance. Would be very convenient and nice. But in any case, you won't have an issue finding parking if you drive into the park. There are also a couple of food trucks there usually too. First time I went there to hike with my dog, I had absolutely no idea that the vast majority of the park is off limits because of radioactivity! They've been working on it. And when I'm done, I've taken the train backwards a stop to Great Kills to enjoy Nonna's pizza and cool off and recharge inside. Ha, that is some very funny timing with your Staten Island pizza references. I was just about to say that I still haven't jumped off at Dongan Hills on the way back to get Lee's. Went to Denino's once at least. Wish I knew a ton more about Staten Island. What a fascinating place. There are some very interesting nature and wildlife areas, some of the very best and isolated in the city. And with some fascinating history too, especially with Robert Moses. I think you can find some old bungalows near some of the beaches. I think basically all of the Rockaway ones are long gone. Staten Island really is beautiful in many areas. It is so cool to be alone and surrounded by nature and wildlife while being able to say you're in NYC.
