I think there’s a distinct difference between the exploratory solo and the self indulgent kind. I think that at their root, the Dead belong to the former (and thus why a contingent of the punks had some degree of respect for them), and that Television reflected some of that in the guitar work. Verlaine and Lloyd are in a whole category of their own though. Really original stuff.

As usual a pretty astute take from Albini. I’m in that camp too. I also love Adventure. The biggest difference between the Dead and Television for me is that I can still stomach listening to Television after all these years. In fact, I still really love them. The Dead, not as much. Henry Rollins tells of seeing VH on an early tour - & how he'll never forget seeing Eddie rip a solo ...& really fleetingly look @ his own hands - like he couldn't believe himself what he'd just done. So - there is that. The image & message were too frat boy for me though - & I didn't feel it after the debut. Mighty band nonetheless.

I’ll always stand by the first two Dead records. They have more in common with experimental music generally, plus Pigpen, than any of the mid tempo boomer coke jams of the 70s. God the more I think about it, I really think that band turned to absolute garbage by the 70s and they only got worse from there. Amazing that oldies revue still tours
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm
Franco Twinkie:

The first time I saw the Dead in 1971 they were in top form. Jerry Garcia was fierce. The first time I saw Television in 1978, the interplay between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd was nuanced and sublime. Both show were on Sunset Blvd in the heat of Summer.

I attended every single Grateful Dead show. (Warlocks? No!) Every last one of them. To this day I don't understand why they adopted Mayer. But over the years I've come to recognize as fact what I stated as mere opinion in middle school, c. 73, i.e., that Garcia was a consummate musician. They were not "about quantity." They were about excellence, reaching out to and on occasion achieving perfection.

You nailed it Franco. I’ve been up here about two years now and am only now getting privy to these things. A lot of locals are pretty nice but when you are from a place this small, your worldview tends to be so small it creates total ignorance. Otherwise well intending people can become really dangerous in the wrong circumstances or given the wrong idea about something. The Jefferson thing is sort of an example of how small (and white) people intend to keep it too. I try not to dwell too much and keep to myself. Thank God for my Dog!
