Nathan Davis was coaxed to return to the U.S. from Paris in 1969 to create and lead the Jazz Studies dept. at Pitt, one of the first of its kind in the nation. When Davis retired, in 2013, he was replaced by one of his former students, the eminent pianist Geri Allen. Nicole Mitchell was the spectacular choice to replace Allen after her death in 2017.

Mary Halvorson is closely connected to Pittsburgh. She was invited to perform at the performance space City of Asylum a number of years ago, and has kept returning with different groups and associations over the years, including several residencies, and a wonderful recording project, by City of Asylum. Mary is now on CoA's advisory board helping to attract more great creative visionaries to Pittsburgh.

I couldn't renew the last book I was reading (Wild Seed) cause they have it on hold and I am waiting for them to return the next one (Clay's Ark, the first Butler I ever read a long time ago).
Also reading a sort of part bio, part analysis of her by Gerry Canavan.
But my goal is to go through everything of her's this year, including some newly released short stories and something that is only available on e-book.I am about to dig into Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart which Wild Seed was partly based on.

As a general rule, noun compounds in English don't have plural modifiers. So, we say "car lot" rather than "cars lot," even though the lot has many cars. So, I think "neighbors" must be a possessive in "Neighbors' Noise." Otherwise it would be Neighbor Noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am
Dave in Vermont:

I just read about Octavia's Brood last night; Afrofuturist stories strongly inspired by Butler's own work." Canavan talked about it in the context of an anthology of Afrofuturist stories she tried to edit before it was called Afrofuturism. She couldn't get it off the ground because she was ahead of her time. She broke the ground to make it happen.

@Listener Gregory: Are you one of the copy-editor cohort?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am

One neighbor can make noise. More than one neighbor can make noise. Neighbors Noise is the noise produced by more than neighbor. It's distinct from neighbor noise. Pop bottles shadow is a single shadow cast by more than one pop bottle. Pop bottle shadow would be the shadow cast by a lone pop bottle.

Now I'd kinda like the EU to abolish DST. That could let me listen to different shows, early or late. Very selfish reasoning

Just realized that that has a salacious interpretation that I did not actually intend. I swear!

Benjamin Alard embarked a few years ago on a complete Bach keyboard works project, four volumes of the 17 volume series of which have already been released, with three or four CDs per volume. Alard performs many of the pieces on organ. Not contemporary, not unexpected, but really delicious.

...ooof. Back from an Einstein's Birthday rabbit hole. But as we're both Year of the Hare that's appropriate I suppose. Back to the Music we both LOVE...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am

Do you know of any pieces in pie time (3/14)? It would be nice to have a holiday theme song to play for the neighbors.

A popular joke around here is hearing a truck backing up and asking if I'm listening to things for the next show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am

Doug, tell me more about this "compressor" on your hot water heater. Is this some cutting edge Pittsburgh tech?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am

@Doug: someone one posted on Bryce's playlist that he first thought his fridge was malfunctioning. To which RTD replied "I must have your refrigerator!"
