Gary, Chresti, TDK, and String! Thank you for entering the Horse Zone tonight.

WR:

coming along with y'all, but I'll walk.

didn't know about the Montego Joe recording with Corea & Graves until this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Sam Segal:

Trot alongside us, WR! Yeah, it's a fun album. I didn't think a whole of it when I picked it up in the shop, but now it has taken on some added significance in my collection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
wmbogart:

Hello stablemates! I somehow didn't know about that Montego Joe recording either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm

Nice to see you, wmbogart!

hello Sam and horse thieves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
Sam Segal:

Another fun fact about Montego Joe: he played drums on Babatunde Olatunji's legendary "Drums of Passion" album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm
Sam Segal:

Who you callin' a horse thief, Coel?!
Avatar 10:20pm
TDK60:

I used to dig fusion when I was a young'un, didn't care about the discerners of corn...yet. Then I did; then I didn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
coelacanth∅:

y'all! you lose your own horse and start lookin' at mine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Sam Segal:

@TDK, I think I'm following a similar trajectory in my relationship to corn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
chresti:

So, where is that photo taken?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
chresti:

That is a nice looking horse with horns, coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm
Sam Segal:

@Chresti, off the island of Maui in 1973.
Avatar 10:28pm
TDK60:

Huh, Maui. Sam, hasn't '73 turned up before here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
chresti:

Thanks Sam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Sam Segal:

Probably has, TDK. Most of the images I use are from roughly 1973-1977. They are all taken as part of the EPA's Documerica project, which had a bunch of freelance photographers go out and document environmental conditions across the country.
Avatar 10:33pm
TDK60:

That photo of the music wall in Minneapolis was a day in '73, weren't other photos?
Avatar 10:37pm
TDK60:

Ah, Documerica. That's a place to find some. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
Sam Segal:

Can't remember any specific '73 images recently, but I am sure several of them have been over the years. I've been using this archive for my photos since the show started, pretty much.

WR:

@Sam @10:16, understandable that you may have been underwhelmed when first listening to the Montego Joe recording. It is not like they are trying to blend in the innovations they are soon to be doing with Ayler & Davis. They were on M. Joe's gig doing his thing.

Wow, thank you for sharing those WR! Heard about the exhibit at the time but I'm way over on the other side of the country, I would've loved to see this in person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks, WR! Kicking myself for not attending this exhibition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm

this year has been like 2016 so far, with so many musician deaths
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
wmbogart:

I really hope some of his LabVIEW heartbeat recordings get released someday. I see they had an excerpt as part of the exhibit but I'm not aware of any public release (but someone please correct me if I'm wrong!)

an exhibit of similar works is currently in Baltimore I think and will then be at a NYC gallery this summer.

WR Thanks for sharing those pix
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Sam Segal:

I still haven't seen the documentary that came out about Milford Graves a few years ago, but I've heard great things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
chresti:

I'm here, some shifty horse was showing me pictures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
wmbogart:

If you find the time, I really recommend it. I've watched it a few times since they put it out. He had a lot to teach us, even beyond the incredible musicianship.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm
Sam Segal:

I definitely will. I want to learn more about his martial arts practice, which I assume gets covered, given the title of the doc ("Full Mantis").
  11:26pm
Dean:

Saw Graves with John Zorn at Vision Festival.

Saw Corea with Return to Forever at the Music Center in LA.

Can't quite get my head around the fact that we're losing these people.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
wmbogart:

It does @Sam. I don't know the first thing about martial arts personally, but I think you'll enjoy it if you do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Sam Segal:

Agreed, Dean. When I've seen a musician play live, the loss always feels deeper to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
chresti:

That looks like a nice show, thanks WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Doug Schulkind:

Mucho Milford hooray! Thanks, Mr. Segal! I see you started off the show with Montego Joe. Did you know he had a show on WFMU?! His last year was my first at the station, 1987.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:37pm

glad to share. The sculptures are just a facet of his investigation into heartbeat and body electropulse energy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm

Hi all! Looks like I have to catch this show in the archived! Here to take it out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm

Wow, Doug, I had no idea! Did he go by the name Montego Joe on air? Or his given name Roger Sanders?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Sam Segal:

Doc! Glad you could make it for the tail end live.
  11:44pm
Dean:

Interviewed Lewis's spouse, the marvelously eccentric Miya Masaoka, at my apartment near Berkeley many years ago. Later, Lewis assigned a paper I published for one of his classes at Columbia.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm

greetings doc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Sam Segal:

@Dean, I am not familiar with Miya Masaoka's work. Just scanned her wiki page and it looks really interesting. Will have to investigate further.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
doctorjazz:

Hey, Coel, Dean, all toy Equestrians!
  11:49pm
Dean:

Miya has few boundaries, musically speaking. A buddy of mine made a movie that briefly featured her, the content deriving from the interview in my apartment.

I really enjoy her Monk tribute with Cyrille and Workman. Saw her in W. Hollywood many years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
wmbogart:

@Dean Wow!!! I'm in an apartment near Berkeley right now, but I've never done anything nearly as cool. Is your interview published anywhere?
  11:51pm
Doug Schulkind:

He went by Montego Joe. I can’t say I remember much about his show.
  11:53pm
Dean:

@wmbogart, This is one of those amazing circumstances that proves there are no mere coincidences. I'm sure you're listening for many of the same reasons I listen. Thus, we self-select WFMU and Berkeley or environs!

Paper is here: http://www.improvcommunity.ca/sites/improvcommunity.ca/files/research_collection/407/Improvisation_Urban_Planning.pdf

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
Sam Segal:

Wow, that is a fun fact, Fun Fact!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
wmbogart:

Wow @Dean, this is a super interesting intersection. I'm going to sit down and read through it tonight. I've always felt that Peter Brotzmann is woefully undercited in urban theory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am
Sam Segal:

Going to let this piece finish. Feel free to stick with me for another 5 mins.

Dean:

The paper was published in the first online issue of an ongoing journal out of Guelph. You might find the connections you seek there.
  12:02am
Dean:

George Lewis wrote the introductory piece for that first issue, by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06am

And I see Pauline Oliveros was in that issue too! Feels like Mills is always represented one way or another.
