In 1965 the music committee of the Pulitzer recommended that Duke Ellington be awarded a special prize. This was turned down by the Pulitzer Prize Advisory Board. Ellington famously commented, "Fate is being good to me. It does not wish me to become famous too young." (He was 66 at the time.)

from Wikipedia: "Duke Ellington was noted for his inventive use of the orchestra, or big band, and for his eloquence and charisma. His reputation continued to rise after he died, and he was awarded a posthumous Pulitzer Prize Special Award for music in 1999."

i was told that Duke Ellington was initially up for a
Pulitzer in the late 60s or early 70s (my forgetfulness) but a clique of jazz pundits vigorously opposed it saying he was merely a band leader riding on others creativity. I was was told this proudly by one of the pundits.

I saw Okkyung Lee here in town last year, before covid hit. Very special and well worth watching and listening to.

Jeff Golick:

That "Albert Ayler (HLWTS)" is a Leroy Jenkins tune, btw.

Now Doug has me hearing in Bob & Ray's voices, "And how long is the Comodo Varan?"

Hi-Low, all! That Reid/hawkins collab is indeed great!

Did Ayler play on NYC subway at times? I encountered a sax player on the 1 train a couple of times that I like to believe was him...

Good morning, Doug and drummers. Dug the Celli set.

@Hugo
I need to do more of that.

@Stork
Hello, sweet man o' Münster!

@Jeff Golick
Shite, I was going to mention that.

@Lewis
He did in my dreams. Was that you?!?!

So glad you're here, Mike East!

Simaro Massiya Lutumba was a member of Franco's band, T.P.O.K. Jazz, but Franco fired him because he was threatened by Simaro's talent as a composer. Simaro was beloved by everyone and was known simply as "The Poet."

I remember seeing Sam Mangwana at the Ritz in NYC in around '83 or '84. Maybe my first live Afro-pop show. Let's just say I danced like the young man I then was.

Re. Doug's remarks to the last set: One of Okkyung Lee's solo albums, Ghil, was recorded at variuos spots around Oslo and surrounding areas. All outdoors, accompanied by the ambient sounds of the city. A genuine field recording?

You're so lucky, Doug. Sam Mangwana has a beautiful voice and a softer approach to soukous. Magnificent.

Such masters they were (are). The sound of the Congo just before soukous took off with its crazy intertwining guitar magic.

@Jeff Golick
I am more than a little chagrined with that particular music bed. The track is by Pete Drake & His Talking Steel Guitar, but I edited out Mr. Drake. (Please don't tell him.)

You should Google "Pete Drake" and "Talking Steel Guitar." It involves a rubber hose he blows into. No really.
