Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Listener comments!

Listener Gregory:

I was so late last week that I came to the comment board an hour early this week. It has been very lonely.
Avatar 🎭 7:02pm
Listener Gregory:

Also, I'm very sorry to begin on a negative note, but this version of Puttin' on the Ritz makes my teeth ache. Where is Fred Astaire when we need him?
Avatar 7:02pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Lol sorry to begin on a teeth-aching note! I like this version because I love SYNTHS
Avatar 7:03pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

My favorite character in Les Mis is the synthesizer
Avatar 7:05pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

See? Synths do Gilbert & Sullivan!
Avatar 🎭 7:05pm
Listener Gregory:

My main gripe is that the best part of the song is the rhythm, and this version just gets rid of that. I will allow synths.

Webhamster Henry:

You should have played this bit by Hugh Laurie: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:11pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: That's true, it does make the meter all wonky
Avatar 7:12pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: excited to watch that, I'm sure Hugh Laurie doing Puttin' on the Ritz is a delight no matter how he does it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Webhamster Henry:

Bertie kind of gives up on it.
Avatar 🎭 7:14pm

Excuse me, you have sold me a dead parrot.
This parrot is defunct; it is no more!
Avatar 7:14pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

pinin for the fjooooords!

aww that makes me nostalgic for my last WFMU show

Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I love this version of Puttin on the Ritz AND the Pirate King!
Avatar 🎭 7:26pm
Listener Gregory:

I’m glad you told us the ages of Tim Rice and Lloyd-Webber when they wrote that, because I was seriously worrying about what has happened to them.
Avatar 🎭 7:34pm
Listener Gregory:

BB, if you didn’t hear Mandy Patinkin on Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, you might enjoy it. Mo Rocca sings along with him. Briefly.

Einstein On the Air!
Avatar 7:35pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Hey WR and Lizzie!!
Avatar 7:36pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I'll have to check that out, I love Wait Wait Don't Tell Me! And the "only sleeping thing" makes me think of my last WFMU show bc it was called Love Is Only Sleeping :)
Avatar 🎭 7:39pm
Listener Gregory:

Einstein! This changed my life when I heard it.
Avatar 🎭 7:48pm
Listener Gregory:

Your comment on Great Recession musicals is interesting, because my memory is that during the Depression, playwrights wrote huge casts into their plays in order to employ as many people as possible.
Avatar 🎭 7:49pm
Listener Gregory:

(Not that I remember the Depression, but I believe I have read that. Maybe.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I watched the broadcast of his Egyptian opera a while ago and loved it. I'd love to see a Philip Glass opera live.
Avatar 7:50pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: That's interesting, I wish they had done that during the Great Recession too :(
Avatar 🎭 7:56pm
Listener Gregory:

I think the difference is that people still went to the theater in droves during the Depression; and of course, the actors were paid peanuts.

Avatar 🎭 8:32pm

This song must be from the original Dumbo, not the 2010 version.
Avatar 8:38pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

which 2010 version?
Avatar 8:38pm
Roberto:

Shit, I forgot to order my daughter her calzone. She's really pissed.
Avatar 8:38pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

oh I must have confused things by putting 2010 as the year. the soundtrack was reissued then, but it's from Dumbo 1941
Avatar 🎭 8:39pm
Listener Gregory:

Got it! I was just about to guess that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

Not enough Brecht / Eisler gets played.
Avatar 8:42pm
Roberto:

I try my best but sometimes my best just isn't good enough.
Avatar 8:46pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

aw I hope you're not feeling too bad Roberto
Avatar 🎭 8:48pm

I hope that after the final duel in Hamlet someone says, "He's dead, Jim."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
Webhamster Henry:

How you know it's WFMU: Shatner sings.
Avatar 8:50pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I want to see a production of Hamlet starring Shatner that's played completely straight and then they end it with that line
Avatar 8:50pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Sometimes this show remembers it's technically a WFMU show ;)
Avatar 🎭 8:52pm
Listener Gregory:

@BB, I *really* want to believe you about that Shatner show. Oh, do I.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm

With music written by his dad?
Avatar 8:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: Haha you're welcome, I was very excited when I heard it, it's not technically a showtune but Hamlet is theater so...
Avatar 8:59pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yes, Moose Charlap is Bill Charlap's father
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm
doctorjazz:

Had to Google it, yup, that's Dad.
Avatar 🎭 9:01pm

Moose Charlap sounds like the name of a big lug in the Big Sleep.

This Momma Looks Sharp is not recognizable to me. Nice!
Thanks for an excellent show, Bronwyn.
