A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I'm not a huge fan of live recordings in general, but it will be nice to return to the digital salon nonetheless.

The Masque got shut down after a couple years. But the Club Lingerie ruled Sunset Blvd for years. Saw many shows there. The Variety Arts Center - a multi-story space - was great for a while, in downtown. I saw a young Ice T there, among many others (e.g.: fIREHOUSE, opening for the Butthole Surfers).

Then Johnny Depp brought Brendon back to Sunset for the Viper Room, another great spot. Speaking of the Butthole Surfers, Gibby could often be spotted singing with Mr Depp on bass, as Jeffrey Lee Pierce hung out at the bar. I met my wife there, on a night when Adam from The Counting Crows was bartending there for some reason.

There are two live Wipers records. The OG one is from after they recorded Over The Edge, and I think might have been recorded while they were on tour in Europe, if memory serves. In 2008 Negativland opened for Butthole Surfers on New Years Eve at the Fillmore, SF. I was Negativland's sound guy during the 2000s so after I did sound for Negland, I got stupidly high and sat at the back stage right on the stage while it was filled with thick fog and Gibby was screaming just feet away. Crazy night.

Oh yeah, the Buttlhole Surfers sued for the rights to all of their stuff on the Touch & Go catalog, which led to the owner of the lable crushing all of the remaining copies in a trash compactor. Apparently once their one-hit-wonder status started to dwindle, they scurried to secure the rights to all of their work on smaller labels.

Some of those bands can't really quit, for financial reasons. I read an interesting interview with They Might Be Giants, where they talked about the financial reason why they have never stopped touring. The wouldn't make nearly as much money in a regular job. Touring is just worth it enough to keep doing it, but not really worth to QUIT doing it, for lack of another way to make that kind of income.

I'm not sure how much touring Alice Bag does now, but on the last tour she did, she would tour by herself, and get a pick-up band in each city, recruiting people from local punk bands to play her songs. A gal I knew in the band JJCnV got to play guitar for Alice Bag on that tour.

When unwound was still a current band, The Ramen City Kid and I would go and see them often. I saw them at least five times with him back in the say, and now twice on their reuinion tours. While no one could ever replace their original bass player, I do enjoy the reunion shows quite a bit. There really wasn't a band like unwound, and now, kids love to try. But back then, it really felt like this was something unique and new.
